Details

The Express Entry system is a popular pathway for skilled workers to immigrate to Canada. It manages applications for three federal economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you understand and navigate the Express Entry process:

Overview of Express Entry

Express Entry is an online system that Canada uses to manage immigration applications for skilled workers. It is a point-based system where candidates are ranked against each other, and the highest-ranking candidates are invited to apply for permanent residency.

# Express Entry Programs

  1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP):

    • For skilled workers with foreign work experience.
    • Requires meeting specific language, education, and work experience criteria.
  2. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP):

    • For skilled workers qualified in a skilled trade.
    • Requires a job offer or a certificate of qualification in a skilled trade issued by a Canadian province or territory.
  3. Canadian Experience Class (CEC):

    • For skilled workers with Canadian work experience.
    • Requires at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada in the last three years.

# Eligibility Criteria

  • Adaptability: Points are awarded for factors that may help you adapt to living in Canada, such as having family in Canada or previous work/study experience in Canada.

Express Entry Process

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Determine Eligibility:

  2. Gather Documents:

    • Language Test: Take a recognized language test like IELTS or CELPIP for English, or TEF for French.
    • Educational Credential Assessment (ECA): Get your foreign education credentials assessed by an approved organization.
    • Work Experience Documentation: Gather reference letters from employers and proof of work experience.
    • Identity Documents: Valid passport, birth certificate, etc.
  3. Create an Express Entry Profile:

    • Complete an online Express Entry profile through the IRCC website.
    • You will be assigned a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on factors like age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and adaptability.
  4. Enter the Express Entry Pool:

    • Submit your profile to enter the pool of candidates.
    • Your profile is valid for one year, during which you can improve your score and ranking.
  5. Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA):

    • If you meet the cut-off score in the regular Express Entry draws, you will receive an ITA.
    • Draws typically occur every two weeks, and the cut-off score varies.
  6. Submit Application for Permanent Residency:

    • After receiving an ITA, you have 60 days to submit a complete application for permanent residency.
    • This includes uploading supporting documents and paying the application fees.
  7. Medical Exam and Police Certificates:

    • Undergo a medical examination by an approved panel physician.
    • Obtain police clearance certificates from countries where you have lived for more than six months.
  8. Application Processing:

    • The application is reviewed, and background checks are conducted.
    • The processing time is typically six months, but it can vary.
  9. Receive Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR):

    • Once approved, you will receive a COPR and instructions on how to complete the landing process in Canada.
  10. Arrive in Canada:

    • Land in Canada with your COPR and other required documents to officially become a permanent resident.

# Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)

The CRS is used to score and rank Express Entry candidates. Points are awarded for:

  • Core Human Capital Factors: Age, education, language proficiency, Canadian work experience.
  • Skill Transferability Factors: Combination of education and work experience.
  • Additional Factors: Sibling in Canada, French language proficiency, Canadian education, and job offer.

The maximum CRS score is 1,200 points. Here’s a brief breakdown:

  • Core Factors: Up to 600 points.
  • Skill Transferability: Up to 100 points.
  • Additional Factors: Up to 600 points (e.g., job offer, provincial nomination).

Use the CRS Calculator to estimate your score: https://ircc.canada.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/crs-tool.asp

# Improving Your CRS Score

  • Improve Language Skills: Higher language test scores can significantly boost your CRS score.
  • Gain More Work Experience: Additional work experience, especially in Canada, can increase your score.
  • Enhance Education: Obtain a higher educational credential or a Canadian degree.
  • Get a Job Offer: A valid job offer from a Canadian employer can add 50-200 points.
  • Provincial Nominee Program (PNP): Receiving a nomination from a province can add 600 points to your CRS score.

# Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

Express Entry candidates can also apply for nomination through a PNP. Provinces and territories in Canada have their own immigration programs targeting specific skill needs.

  • Express Entry Streams: Many provinces have streams aligned with Express Entry, allowing you to be nominated for provincial immigration while in the Express Entry pool.
  • Applying for PNP: Apply directly to a province’s PNP. If nominated, you will receive additional CRS points.
